Serves Grades 6-11
Students in grades 6-11 attend AventWest Children’s Mentoring/Kids Cafe on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 4:45 – 6:45 p.m. at Avent Ferry United Methodist Church.
The students enjoy arriving early to spend time outside where they enjoy soccer and other physical activities. The church site provides a safe place for the students to play games and socialize with their peers.
From 5:15-6:15pm the students work on homework and basic skills with volunteer tutors. The students at the Avent Ferry site have homework to complete and can work on reports or research in the computer lab. English is a second language for the majority of the students. Volunteers tutors assist in understanding directions, give guidance on math problems, read with the students, help with writing assignments and the completion of special projects.
While the students work with the tutors, volunteers prepare a dinner meal with food from the Food Bank and from frozen entrees prepared and delivered by the Interfaith Food Shuttle each week. At the end of the meal, students are returned to their homes.
