AventWest Children's Mentoring

About Us

AventWest Children’s Mentoring is an after school tutoring program for academically at risk students residing in the AventWest community near N.C. State University. Students are referred to the program by teachers, counselors, social workers, families and community members.  The program is sponsored by AventWest Community Development Corporation (AWCDC).

The program includes transportation to and from the tutoring sites, a physical activity period, assistance with homework, reading, math and basic skills, a dinner meal provided by the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina and the Interfaith Food Shuttle or a healthy snack.

Activities for students, parents and volunteers include nutrition education, enrichment activities, parent workshops and volunteer orientation and training.

 The AventWest community in southwest Raleigh is an area bounded roughly by Avent Ferry Road on the south, Athens Drive and Jones Franklin Road on the west, Hillsborough Street on the north and Gorman Street on the east.
